- How did you first get into illustration?
Well I could tell you a cool story like I was struck by lightning twice in the same spot, or I could tell you the truth and that I've always loved to draw and figured it was a good thing to get into. I didn't know it was called Illustration till I went to school, But I've been loving the craft ever since. Drawing is what I love to do, and seemed like what I should go into.
- How would you best describe your style of illustration?
Dark, moody scenes shrouded with stories and narrative.
- Please take us through your design process, where do you start?
Well, I try and break it down depending on the project. With the main goal in mind of getting my idea to read in one shot to the viewer. Then comes the research and how far I can take the idea. Then to sketches, tighten up. then I let it sit, if I can so that I can come back to it and with fresh eyes then I add/subtract to make it just the essentials then take it to final (the super fun part).
- What tools do you use for your work?
Primarily, mixed-media. I usually working graphite, ink & gouache then take it in and finish it digitally. But when I'm in a time crunch I usually work in graphite and digital.
- When illustrating, do you sometimes get blocked for ideas? If so, how do you overcome that?
Oh for sure, but when it comes down to it, I try to not torture myself about it. Usually sitting at my desk trying to get the ideas to come out just becomes counter productive. I try and take the "Mad Men" approach to things and go somewhere, be it my favorite cafe, or anywhere around the city with sketchbook in hand. Sometimes all you need is just a change of environment and possibly some good company.
- What would be your ultimate goal as an illustrator?
I would have to say the ultimate dream would be to doing editorial/advertising illustration and whatever else comes my way freelance full-time. I would call that living the dream.
- What style music do you mostly listen to when you work?
Honestly, depends on my mood. I go from the classics, Dinah Washington to Little Wings to Modest Mouse. It really depends on the mood I'm in or the mood I’m trying to get into. It really can influence your work in the long run. Inspiration is definitely key.
- Do you have any advice for aspiring illustrators?
Just keep the pencil on the paper and really absorb whatever you can. Also, don't be close minded. Types of work you think you don't like now months later you could be in love with. I know my tastes have changed over the years. Also, experiment whenever possible. Not only does it keep things fun, but you could run across a way to stand out of the illustration crowd.
