How did you first get into illustration?

The day I found out what the term meant, I knew it was want I wanted to do. I started college at Boston University’s School for the Arts and they were very classical, very traditional, which was great for really learning how to draw and paint, but they were purist and stressed painting for the sake of art, as in waiting on tables during the day and painting at night, and I knew there must be something better for me. Then I heard about what illustration was – getting to draw/paint for a living! Not to mention I loved (and still do love) that you’re always being fed ideas with assignments – and that your work actually gets seen by lots of people. That’s my favorite part. It’s all my favorite part.

How would you best describe your style of illustration?

I have a few different styles now, I regularly work in oil and ink and sharpie and charcoal and collage and digital, but I like to think they all share a common aesthetic. Something bold and confident with a strong sense of design and draftsmanship.

Please take us through your design process, where do you start?

I spend an inordinate amount of time looking at everything – photos and art and books and everything I can get my eyes on that can inform my ideas and execution. Then I’ll do some very loose pencils and after they are approved I dive right in and see what happens.

What tools do you use for your work?

As mentioned above, a little of everything. Depends on which way the wind is blowing that day.

When illustrating, do you sometimes get blocked for ideas? If so, how do you overcome that?

Blocks are an integral part of my process. I get blocked, freak, and then it all flows quite nicely.

What would be your ultimate goal as an illustrator?

To do as much as I want of what I’m doing right now. And to keep evolving and changing as I go along.

What style music do you mostly listen to when you work?

I’m a very tolerant listener, my taste in music is 360 degrees … maybe 359 …

Do you have any advice for aspiring illustrators?

Work like crazy in whatever style (or styles) most satisfy you … Don’t stop for a long time. You will get better, people will recognize your efforts, and you will work more, then you will get better and more people will recognize your efforts and you will work more, then … You get the idea. It’s not easy but when it works, yeah, baby …

What web sites would you recommend viewing?

That is a bottomless can of worms. Sort of like my taste in music – I like to poke around and find myself someplace unexpected.
