Hello. My name is Andrea and I’m an artist and a freelance illustrator in Vancouver. I graduated from Emily Carr University of Art and Design with a degree in film making. My art is inspired by the subconscious and the responses to my surroundings. Lately I enjoy drawing animals, people and ghosts and emotional landscapes.

- How did you first get into illustration?
Upon finishing my grad film, an illustrative animation, I became more interested in drawing as a medium for storytelling, so I deicide to study illustration and design in Designskolen Kolding in Denmark. When I came back from Denmark I did some volunteer work for some independent publications and started from there. Soon after that I was fortunate enough to get commissioned by other local and international publications and companies.
- How would you best describe your style of illustration?
I work in a whimsical and surreal style. I see my art as a personal visual journal with an intimate quality. I try to have a consistent style for both art and commercial work.
- Please take us through your design process, where do you start?
After reading the brief for an illustration assignment, I usually do some brainstorming of words related to the topic. After that I would come up with a couple of concept sketches that best represent those words. I use different approaches depending on the assignment, but I always end up with a couple of rough concepts sketches to choose from. I draw everything with ink by hand first and take it through a digital process.
- What tools do you use for your work?
I mostly use acrylic ink for my work because I like the unpredictable quality of water medium. Lately I’ve also been trying different mediums such as pencil and paint.
- When illustrating, do you sometimes get blocked for ideas? If so, how do you overcome that?
If so, how do you overcome that? I think it’s a pretty common situation for artists. When that happens I’d ask my friends for feedbacks, or take a break and then get back to work with a different perspective. I prefer having more than one work area so I can jump around and draw in different environments. Doodling aimlessly also helps with generating new unexpected ideas.
- What would be your ultimate goal as an illustrator?
My goal is to be able to make a living being an independent illustrator and artist and to work on projects with a good amount of artistic freedom.
- What style music do you mostly listen to when you work?
Depends on my mood. Upbeat music usually puts me in the mood to work. I especially like shoegaze, post punk and new wave.
- Do you have any advice for aspiring illustrators?
The most important thing is to be honest to your work and enjoy the creative process.
